 What is MESA?
MESA (Mutual Education Support and Advocacy) Family Workshops are a series of classes for relatives of individuals who have mental illness.  Since 1987 MESA has existed to reduce stress in the lives of families affected by mental illness by providing education on mental illness, coping strategies and community resources, and by the support which develops among participants.

MESA Family Workshops are offered across Virginia, enhancing educational opportunities for families and partnerships between NAMI affiliates and mental health professionals.

MESA Family Workshops Train the Leader Seminar

The opportunity to learn to be a MESA Family Workshops co-leader is offered through the two-day MESA Family Workshops Train the Leader Seminars. Family member and mental health professional teams from localities across Virginia are trained in the MESA model and how to co-lead the MESA classes.
The curriculum is reviewed, class presentation is modeled, and resources, marketing strategies, and all materials are shared with seminar participants.

NAMI Virginia and DMHMRSAS provide the lodging, meals and materials needed for Train the Leader Seminars.  Also provided, at no charge to each team teaching MESA classes, are updated co-leader and class participant manuals for each MESA Family Workshops class.  NAMI Virginia also maintains statistics provided by co-leaders that account for the numbers of people who attend classes, and the number of classes offered in each locality.

Family members and mental health professionals interested in being trained to co-lead MESA Family Workshops can call 757-385-0800 or express interest by emailing lbrant@vbgov.com.
