Prevention & Education at HCS works to create drug-free communities by partnering with other groups and organizations and providing evidence-based programs that increase the development of positive life skills and help prevent/reduce youth substance abuse and negative behavior. These programs target the children and adolescents (0-18) of Washington County and Bristol, VA and their families while including everything from school-based education to public awareness to parenting classes.

All of our classes are FREE and offered in both Washington County and Bristol, VA.
Free meals are served and childcare is provided for children too young to participate.

Project Dads

“I learned to value my son’s opinions. This class made my whole family work better.”

Project Dads is a comprehensive and innovative parenting class for fathers that utilize the 24/7 Dad curriculum developed by the parenting experts of the National Fatherhood Initiative. This program helps men develop the attitudes, knowledge and skills they need to get and stay involved with their children. Topics covered include discipline, working with mom and co-parenting, showing and handling feelings, masculinity, dealing with anger, improving communication skills, stress, substance use, work and more.

Strengthening Families

“I learned new ways to handle situations with my children. I learned activities that we can do as a family to improve our relationship.”

The Strengthening Families Program is a family-focused parenting class for parents, grandparents and caregivers. The class includes highly interactive topics geared toward managing stress, improving communication skills, goal setting, solving problems as a family and discipline. The program utilizes role-plays, discussions and family projects along with providing developmentally appropriate examples for common problems from preschoolers to teens.

Early Childhood Education

“As a first-time mother, I learned skills to help prepare me to care for my child in the days and years ahead.”

The Early Childhood Parenting Program is for parents, caregivers and expecting parents whose children are newborn through age six. Classes help parents gain overall parenting skills and better understand their child’s behavior including ways to handle crying, temper tantrums, toilet training, lying, jealousy and other common challenges. This class also focuses on building self-esteem and increasing communication.
